Member Spotlight: Carol L. Cordon-Allred

I was born and raised in Layton, Utah. I first started as a computer operator running the day and night jobs for a local oil company. Then I hired into the entertainment field, which was fun but very draining. I programmed venues for ticket sales and worked with concert promoters, bands, sporting sales offices like the Utah Jazz, and many more. Working in this field for 10 years with no life was just too demanding. Then eight years ago I found Horizon Credit Union in Farmington, Utah, where as an information system specialist I can be my own person running a network and telecommunication system and build/fix computers. Hey, I have even been known to fix a toilet! Today I live in Layton, in the home I grew up in. I have three beautiful daughters and two wonderful grandchildren.

Biggest challenge for 2006

Converting some of our older computers, making them “newer” with Windows XP, and creating group policies for the credit union and then through OUs putting them into place.

Best advice

Keep everything consistent, have rules and stay by them, but allow people to have their own bit of personality in their work space because they spend more time at work then they do at home.

Greatest benefit of being a Council member

The Listserv—I love that thing! The most valuable thing about the council is that everyone is willing to share their ideas and experiences to help you with a problem. I am really big into sharing thoughts, ideas, and solutions.

Best part of my job

I work alone. I set my own priorities of what needs to be done.

Hardest thing about my job

When things go bad, everyone blames me.

Best success story

SurfControl. This keeps people from wasting time on the Internet.

Hobbies and interests

I am an amateur photographer and like to write short stories and poetry. If you attended the CTC Summit in 2006 you may have seen me with my camera in tow. Got some great shots. I also like to quilt but don't seem to find much time for that anymore. Also beading and making jewelry. I also design websites, most recently for the Utah PEO.

People would be most surprised to learn that . . .

I can’t play video games! I am not coordinated enough to move the controls. I can type, I can dance (somewhat), but can't play video games. I am also a secret Stumbler—anyone who knows what that is will know what I am talking about.

Most recent book

Work and the Glory II

Life goal not yet achieved

I have not been to Switzerland—I have dreamed of going ever since I was a

little girl.

Something that always makes me laugh

My granddaughter, Skeekers (KaileyAne), and my children when they walk in the door—they make me smile on the inside, even if it does not show on the outside.

If I had an extra hour in the day . . .

I’d hang out with my husband on the porch swing.
