Member Spotlight : Ron Broaddus

I have been working in the technology world for over 25 years. I have been working with credit unions for the last 14 years, first with systems providers and integrators and the last 7 years at credit unions. I am currently the SVP of Information Technology for Greater Nevada Credit Union in Carson City Nevada.

I was born and raised in a small town of Porterville in the Central Valley of California (which makes me one of the few native Californians). I have a AS in Electronic Engineering and complete work on my BS in Computer Science at National University in San Diego. I first started working with Credit Unions while working for LAN Systems, a network and systems integration company in San Diego, installing wide area networks for Credit Unions in the Southern California area

Biggest challenge for 2006

One of biggest this year is implementing a new VOIP telephone system and Call Center contact system. One of the major issues we discovered was that our LAN/WAN while using current technology was still not optimized to handle VOIP. This discovery lead to having to upgrade most of the network switches in order to support POE and QOS for VOIP.

Best piece of Tech advice?

How not to install a piece of software. By this I mean that I read about others experiences and made sure that I didn’t fall into the same trap.

I also have learned about several software bugs and fixes from the listserv prior to hearing about the issue from either my staff or the vendors

Greatest benefit from being a member of the council?

The great networking with others in the same field and access the resource such as the Listservs

Best part of your job

Getting to work with new technologies such as the new VOIP system we are currently installing. We are able to do so much more we the new systems compared to the old systems that it is becoming easier to meet requests of staff.

Hardest part of your job

Balancing budget vs need

Best Tech success story

Converting our host system from one operating system (HP mpe) to a new system (HPUX) and not having any one outside the IS department realize we had completed the change.
